Here for Good: Kaikoura

On Monday, 14th November 2016, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Kaikoura. It caused severe damage to land, buildings and infrastructure. It also had a serious and immediate impact on the people of Kaikoura.

Those affected needed all the help they could get.

They needed to be safe, warm, and dry. But they also appreciated the small things – like the comfort of a hot meal, and the simple knowledge that people cared.

So, we teamed up with My Food Bag and Goodman Fielder, and arranged for 800 My Food Bag Bargain Boxes to be delivered to the Kaikoura community.

Local community groups and agencies, like the Salvation Army, the Kaikoura Fire Service, the Rural Support Trust, and the local marare, all helped us deliver the 16,000 meals to those who needed them most.

It meant meals for a week, and one less thing for people to worry about. It gave them comfort, relief, and showed people care.

As one of the first insurance companies on the ground after the earthquake, it’s great that we’re able to help communities not just rebuild but reconnect. The reaction from the Kaikoura community shows how the small things can make a big difference.

Getting fresh produce into an earthquake zone is no easy task. Special thanks to My Food Bag, Goodman Fielder and our local community partners for going the extra mile and helping to make this happen.

New Zealanders are increasingly using their insurance cover to claim for smaller losses like mobile phones, and that can have an impact on cover limits.
